During the samundra manthan deadly poison released, a poison which can destroy whole world. At that time lord Shiva come to save and he consumed that poison which resulted as unbearable heat sensation in his body. To To alleviate his suffering, devotees started offering him Gangajal, believing it would cool and soothe him. As ganga origin from gangotri glacier.
